Dylan Collins: Bioaesthetic and Wendy Wischer: Angels and Ancestors, Art Exhibitions 11/1/2009 - 12/6/2009

Two solo exhibitions, Dylan Collins: Diagrammatic Disarray and Wendy Wischer: In Search of Magic, will run concurrently in the McIlroy and Holzhauer Galleries November 1 to December 6, 2009. Collins addresses how humans preserve history, the relationships between beauty and the science and the juxtaposition of systems of order (like taxonomy) with the messiness of everyday life in his art. His large colorful sculptures, hybrid forms that combine features of human, animal and machine, are light, intricate compositions in traditionally heavy materials like cast metal and plastic. Wischer creates mixed-media sculptures covered in thousands of tiny mirrored tiles onto which light is strategically directed to create reflections on walls, floor and ceiling. She explores the boundaries between nature, technology, science, mythology and personal identity and seeks to expose the sacred in everyday life by transforming gallery space with her light sculptures. A Preview Reception for these exhibitions will be held on October 30 from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m.

The galleries at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center at Northwest Florida State College in Niceville announce their 2009-2010 season of exhibitions. All exhibitions are free of charge and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday to Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 pm and 90 minutes prior to most performances in the main stage theater of the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. We're making holiday meal baskets.

We are collecting items to create Thanksgiving and Christmas meal baskets for women and their children who are in shelter and women who are currently using Shelter House's services. The following items will be accepted:

Frozen turkeys and hams*
Canned vegetables
Canned pumpkin pie filling
Pie crust
Dry mashed potato mix
Gravy mix
Stuffing mix
Laundry baskets
Gas/ Grocery gift cards

Items will be accepted at the administration office.

Once again the United Way of Okaloosa-Walton Counties in partnership with A & A Transfer & Storage, and Bangkok Cleaners are planning the annual Coats for Kids at Christmas Drive to help needy children in Okaloosa and Walton Counties. Thanks to the support of local banks and businesses, last year over 2,700 coats were cleaned and distributed to many families throughout the community and schools.

Kick off the holiday season and shop for a cause during the fifth annual Silver Sands Evening of Giving this Sunday, November 22 from 3 – 8 p.m. Evening of Giving is a shopping and entertainment event at Silver Sands benefiting several local and regional charities. Tickets may be purchased for $5 from all participating charities or from Shopper Services on behalf of these organizations, with all ticket proceeds benefiting the charities. Ticket holders enjoy exclusive discounts throughout the evening from over 70 Silver Sands stores and restaurants, most offering at least 20 percent off already reduced prices.

Silver Sands has extended Evening of Giving hours this year to allow for more shopping and charity involvement. Beginning at 3 p.m., several in-store fundraising events occur as local charities partner with Silver Sands stores to raise additional money. Cancer Cure Classic Golf Tournament Benefits American Cancer Society 11/22/2009

Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is hosting the 6th Annual Cancer Cure Classic at Raven Golf Club Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009 as part of the South Walton Area Relay for Life Team to benefit the American Cancer Society.

To support the American Cancer Society, sponsorships are available in forms of table sponsors, sun hat sponsors, moon car sponsors and star hole sponsors. Table sponsors receive a sign at the registration station or an event table. Sun hat sponsors receive a Raven hat with company name embroidered on the back for each player on the team. Moon car sponsors receive golf for two and a sign with company’s name on it on one of Raven’s beverage carts. Starr hole sponsors receive golf for four and a sign on one of Raven’s greens with company name on it.

Registration for the 4 person scramble begins at 7 am with a shotgun start at 8 am. A BBQ lunch follows the tournament. Each player’s entry fee is $125 and includes green fee, cart and BBQ lunch. Mulligans are also available for $5 each with a limit of four per person.

Harbor Docks is turning-in their famous seafood menu for turkey dinner, a 15 year tradition with Habitat for Humanity.

Gather friends and family, locals and tourist at the restaurant on November 26, Thanksgiving Day from 11 a.m. till 7 p.m. for an unforgettable event. Harbor Docks is located at 538 Highway 98 East in Destin.

Enjoy a free delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings compliments of Harbor Docks owner Charles Morgan. Morgan’s connection with Okaloosa Habitat at this event is to assist in the mission of eliminating substandard living conditions locally. Morgan finds this time of year to be an occasion to show gratitude within the community by preparing a tasty dinner that will leave guests ready to relax and enjoy their holiday. Morgan covers the entire cost and partners with Habitat to raise awareness for the non-profit.

Donations may be made to Okaloosa Habitat as a thank you and to assist them with their work in the local neighborhoods. Last year the annual Thanksgiving event raised $16,900 with 100 percent of donations going directly to the local organization.

Harbor Docks and Habitat will continue to provide sit down service with plated food to avoid lines and make the day more enjoyable to spend with family and friends. A cash bar will be available.

Habitat’s contribution for the day is more than 150 volunteers to cover every position in the restaurant. Harbor Docks employees will be there to assist and guide the crews on how to carry out task. An annual t-shirt will be given to volunteers to remember their hard work and as a small gesture thanks from Habitat.

We encourage everyone to partake in this year’s Thanksgiving and are looking forward to seeing familiar and new faces to come and enjoy a day at Harbor Docks with Habitat.

Silver Sands will be the first shopping center in the region to open at midnight on the day after Thanksgiving.

After a full day of eating, watching football and spending time with family on Thanksgiving, the race is on for the best deals in holiday shopping. Blast From The Past and The Scrooge, are a cappella groups performing Saturday night, November 27 and December 5. The holiday celebration continues as Santa Claus flies into Silver Sands on Saturday, December 5 at noon via Sacred Heart Hospital’s AirHeart helicopter. All children under eight years old are invited to dress up in festive holiday costumes and join in the Santa Parade. Following the parade will be snacks, a special appearance by “Prince” and “Princess” Bears of Sacred Heart, photo opportunities with Santa and a costume contest featuring great prizes. All proceeds benefit Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast.

If you miss Santa’s Arrival, there will be two other chances to meet Old Jolly Nick. The Destin History and Fishing Museum will be hosting the 23rd Holiday on the Harbor Destin Boat Parade Sunday, December 13, 2009. Festivities will be held that afternoon all along the Harbor and the Lighted Boat Parade will start at 6 PM. Mark your calendar and plan to add this event to your holiday activities.

The parade can my viewed from docks and restaurants west of Grand Harbor Condominiums on Destin Harbor. All commercial, charter, and private boats are invited to help light up the harbor with the true Destin spirit. You may pick up an entry form in person at the Museum, Destin Community Center, City Hall, Destin Chamber of Commerce, or many harbor businesses. You may also request a fax or email copy by calling the Destin History and Fishing Museum at 850-837-6611 or email kathydestinhistory@embarqmail.com. There is a $25 entry fee per boat.

There will be seven categories: private 30 ft. and under, private 31 ft. and over, charter/commercial boat 30 ft. and under, charter/commercial boat 31 ft. and over, tour boat/motorized, sailboat 30 ft. and under, sailboat 31 ft. and over. Prizes will be awarded in each category.

The Friends Guild of the Destin Library will sponsor a monthly movie night featuring an award winning independent and foreign film on designated evenings at 7:00 pm. The next movie night date is December 15th. The program is free and open to the public. Films are unrated and directed toward mature audiences. Synopsis: Sid, the rebellious son of Kwan, a savage Hong Kong triad boss, escapes to Taiwan upon enraging his father’s adversary, a powerful underground business leader. Hiding out in the mountains, Sid encounters a group of Yen drummers. Their mesmerizing art, rigorous training, and austere way of life pique the hostile young man’s interest and he asks to join the group. Although Sid despises his father, he is turning out to be a younger version of him: wild and defiant. Immersion in the world of the Zen drummers gradually converts him into a focused young man. Sid’s independence from the triad life and his father is profoundly challenged, however, when a twist of fate forces him to choose between loyalty to his family and his new found faith in himself.

Attendees will learn about taxation, financing, insurance, and legal forms of business.
